These spectacular Coprolite specimens are found along the eroding banks of Salmon Creek, near Toledo, WA. [Miocene Wilkes Formation, Lewis County Washington, southwestern Washington USA.] Folks figure them to be fossilized turtle
or ground sloth
dung, however there has long been controversy about their origin.
Some scientists judge them to be pseudo fossils
. These concretions are formed of the mineral siderite, many of them are now oxidized to iron oxides, heavy and fairly tough. The dates referenced for these Coprolites range from 10 - 35 million years ago.
